What Will Happen Tomorrow: Election 2024

5 Minute Read

I want to share a few thoughts on the day before one of the closest elections in recent American history. I cast my vote early, just before a heavy downpour on Halloween. Early voting has certainly made the process more convenient for many, especially in states like Tennessee, where voters can visit any early voting location rather than a specific precinct. Americans are engaged, casting their ballots, and considering what kind of leadership we want for our nation.

Election Uncertainty: A Nation on Edge

Tomorrow’s election holds a lot of weight, with closely contested races for both the White House and Congress. While much focus remains on the presidential race between Trump and Harris, it’s essential to remember that America’s government consists of three branches, not one single “ruler.” Our system is designed to balance power between the executive, legislative, and judicial branches.

We often forget that the legislative branch—the House and Senate—plays a significant role in shaping the nation. Congress creates the laws that the president and executive branch are tasked with enforcing. With both the House and Senate closely divided, the election outcome for these seats could significantly impact the new administration's ability to pass laws and implement policy changes.

The Senate Races: Shifting the Balance of Power

All eyes are on pivotal Senate races, where Republicans are poised to gain seats in states like West Virginia and Montana. In West Virginia, the Republican candidate, Jim Justice, holds a substantial lead, while Montana’s race is tighter but trending Republican. With these projected gains, Republicans could become the majority in the Senate, potentially creating a divided government where the White House and Congress belong to opposing parties.

House Races: Slim Margins and Toss-Up Districts

The House of Representatives also remains highly contested, with about 42 toss-up races. Many of these seats currently belong to Democrats, who are now fighting to retain them. If Republicans manage to keep their slight majority or expand it, this division could shape legislative dynamics for the next term.

The close nature of these races emphasizes a crucial point: turnout will be key. In a tight election, the party that can mobilize its base to vote will likely secure the win. While candidates and their policies do matter, this election is less about persuading undecided voters and more about energizing each party’s supporters to go to the polls.

Trusting God’s Sovereignty Amid Political Uncertainty

Throughout this election, one thought has remained on my heart: God’s sovereignty. As Christians, it’s essential to remember that God is in control, even as we vote and engage in our civic duties. The early church in Acts prayed fervently, trusting in God’s authority over all circumstances, including the leadership of nations.

I encourage you to pray for the candidates running in this election. Leaders have been given authority, yet they ultimately operate under God’s sovereignty. How they govern can either honor Him or bring judgment upon themselves. Imagine the impact if one of our presidential candidates genuinely coming to faith in Christ. This would not only reflect a personal transformation but also bring a remarkable testimony to the authenticity of the gospel.

The Role of Prayer in Politics

As believers, we are called to pray for those in authority (1 Timothy 2:1-2). Let’s pray that elected leaders—whether in the White House, Congress, or local offices—will recognize that they are under God’s authority. Pray that they seek wisdom, show humility, and lead with integrity. And let’s pray that the Word of God fills the highest places of government, including the White House, Congress, and the Supreme Court.

A Closing Thought: The Day Before

If you’re feeling anxious or unsettled about the election, remember that we stand on the edge of tomorrow with confidence, not because of political promises, but because of God’s providence. Regardless of the outcome, we trust that God will sustain us. So, if you haven’t voted, I encourage you to make your voice heard. Participate in this civic duty thoughtfully and prayerfully.

I’ll close with a thought from The Lord of the Rings. On the eve of battle, Pippin remarked that waiting was even more nerve-wracking than the fight itself. We’re on the edge, feeling the anticipation and maybe some anxiety. But we know that God’s providence will carry us through whatever lies ahead.
